In February 1984, the Evening Chronicle reported that the statue of Burns which had been moved to Heaton Park from Walker following its restoration had been vandalised again. Indeed, it had been ‘smashed to pieces by vandals’. Having first toppled it, the assailants had rolled it away before toppling it down a hill, whereupon it broke into pieces. It was thereafter stored in a depot in Jesmond Deane.
