The author: James McConnel is a historian based at Northumbria University. He published an article in 2014 titled ‘A Secret Edwardian Memorial to W.E. Gladstone in Leith?’ in the popular history magazine History Scotland (July/August 2014). In the article he examined the imagery that appears on the statue of Burns produced by the Scottish artist D.W. Stevenson for the Leith Burns Club. Research on Stevenson led to an interest in his wider body of work and this eventually turned up the story of Walker Park’s statue of Burns.
